Teen Driver's Ed Policy & Contract
Attendance Guidelines:
- Students are required, by law, to complete 32 hours of classroom instruction.
- Attendance for all students will be taken daily through roll call.
- Students are responsible for checking-in during roll call in the Live-Stream chat.
- Roll call will be announced by the instructor 2-random times during each class day.
- Students must check-in within (5) minutes (3 min after week 1) of announcing roll call.
- If a student fails to check-in within 5 minutes of roll call; he/she will NOT gain credit for 1 of 2 check-ins.
Successful daily attendance requires:
- 2-Check-ins during daily roll call
Failure Protocol:
Absences:
- Two (2) or more non-check-ins = 1 full absence.
- AT THE END OF CLASS, there will be a total of 32 attendance credits for the 16 days of class.
- (16 days x 2 chat login’s each day = 32 [chat logins].
- IF THE STUDENT MISSES more than 10 check-in’s (5-days) they will be required to repeat the CLASS from the beginning and:
- Pay a $50 reactivation fee and join our next Live-Stream session or,
- Transfer to our self-paced online course with no additional fee.
(Self-paced is entirely online with no live instructor)
DPS Knowledge Exam:
- Students will be completing the DPS knowledge exam on or after Day 5 of class.
- Texas law permits three (3) attempts to pass the knowledge exam.
- If a student FAILS, the DPS knowledge exam on third attempt; student will have to:
- Pay a $50 reactivation fee and join our next Live-Stream session or,
- Transfer to our self-paced online course with no additional fee.
(Self-paced is entirely online with no live instructor)
Acknowledgment of Parent Taught Requirements
Parent Taught Instructor:
- All Driving Zone students enrolling in the 32-hour Live-Stream course are actively placed into Parent Taught upon registration.
- Through this method all required 44-hours of driving will be conducted with a parent/guardian and take place during the 6-months period the student is required to hold their permit.
- In-car instruction hours must not be completed in less than 44 calendar days.
- In-car instruction and practice hours are limited to one hour of driving per day.
TDLR & DPS require a parent taught instructor that meets the following requirements purchase the Parent Taught Application- $20. (*This is a state fee is collected by TDLR and must be purchased separately from the Live-Stream program.)
Requirements for Parent Instructor:
- is at least 25 years old.
- has at least seven years of driving experience.
- The instructor must have a valid driver license for the prior three years. If you held an out-of-state license during the past three years, you will be required to provide a copy of your driving record showing your three years of licensed driving history.
Parent Instructor must NOT have:
- a conviction (including a probated sentence) of criminally negligent homicide
- a conviction (including a probated sentence) of driving while intoxicated in the last seven years
- had their driver license suspended, revoked, or forfeited for traffic related violations in the past three years
Instructors are responsible for checking their criminal and driver records prior to requesting the PTDE Program Guide. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will verify the instructor’s record when it processes the student’s provisional driver license. If DPS determines the instructor does not meet the requirements, DPS will deny the provisional driver’s license along with any prior behind the wheel/in-car instruction provided by the ineligible instructor.

- Transferring:
- If student/parent request to opt out of parent taught and transfer to another driving school a $20 transfer fee will be incurred and must be paid before transfer documents are sent.
